The Phoenix 1.5 is a programmable infrared beacon that is powered by one 9-volt battery. It delivers a powerful infrared flash that can only be seen with night vision equipment, such as the AN/PVS-7 B/D, the AN/PVS-14 or the AN/AVS-9 at distances of over five miles. It can also be seen underwater or through clothing.
The Phoenix 1.5 has a six second memory that can be programmed to flash in any sequence the end user inputs (such as Morse Code). This is accomplished by shorting two pins located on top of the Phoenix 1.5. Removal of the battery deletes any stored codes and miniature indicator lights allow the end user to visually verify the correct input of the assigned code or flash sequence. The Phoenix 1.5 has proven itself useful in both combat and covert operations, some of which include: identifying personnel and friendly forces, marking vehicles and convoys, outlining safe pathways, trails or installations.
