Like the Phoenix 1.5, the 2.5 is a programmable infrared beacon that is powered by one 9-volt battery. The Phoenix 2.5 delivers a powerful infrared flash that can only be seen with night vision equipment, such as the AN/PVS-7 B/D, the AN/PVS-14 or the AN/AVS-9 at distances of over five miles. It can also be seen underwater and through clothing.
In addition to the Phoenix 1.5's features, the 2.5 also has standard flash rate that will initiate when the battery is first installed. It also has a six second memory which can be programmed to flash in any sequence that the end user inputs (such as a Morse type code). This is done by shorting two pins located on top of the Phoenix 2.5. In addition to those features, the 2.5 can also be programmed using remote control for easy sequence programming prior to a night mission. Removal of the battery deletes any stored codes and miniature indicator lights allow the end-user to visually verify the correct input of his assigned code or flash sequence.
The Phoenix 2.5 has proven itself useful in both combat and covert operations, some of which include: identifying personnel and friendly forces, marking vehicles and convoys, outlining safe pathways, trails or installations.
