The Phoenix JR. is an infrared beacon that is powered by one 9-volt battery. The Phoenix JR. delivers a powerful infrared flash that can only be seen with night vision equipment, such as the AN/PVS-7 B/D, the AN/PVS-14 or the AN/AVS-9 at distances of over five miles. It can also be seen under water and through clothing.
Originally designed as an anti-fratricide device to help minimize friendly fire mishaps, the Phoenix JR. has seen service in Kosovo, Bosnia, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq. The Phoenix JR. has proven itself useful in both combat and covert operations, some of which include: identifying personnel and friendly forces, marking vehicles and convoys, and outlining safe pathways, trails or installations.
